AENA is set to complete this year the formulation of the renovation projects for the two airports in Tenerife, with an estimated investment of around 800 million Euros, comprising 550 million for Tenerife Sur and an additional 250 million for the North-city of La Laguna.
This was announced at a press briefing by the president of the airport authority, Maurici Lucena, who shared details of both initiatives with the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, as well as representatives from the island’s business sectors.
Lucena stated at Tenerife South Airport that the prospective investments in the Canary Islands “will greatly surpass 1,000 million Euros,” as part of the new Dora 2027-31.
These expenditures, which will be incorporated into AENA’s investment plans, represent “a clear demonstration of AENA’s commitment to the connectivity and progress of the Canarian archipelago,” he elucidated, emphasising that “airports serve the territory they reside in, ensuring and enhancing the mobility of its inhabitants and businesses.”
Other senior figures from AENA also attended the meetings, including Executive Vice-President Javier Marín; Director General of Airports, Elena Mayoral; General Director of Commercial and Real Estate, María José Cuenda; Regional Director of Aena airports in the Canary Islands, Luis López Chapí; and the directors of Tenerife airports, Juan Carlos Peg (Tenerife Sur) and Francisco Javier Osmán (Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de la Laguna), who had a separate meeting earlier with the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.
The president and CEO of AENA reminded everyone that the airport management body “has consistently promoted all necessary actions” to ensure that their airports “feature the most advanced infrastructure, which guarantees proper connectivity, outstanding quality, and the highest levels of security,” all while maintaining “exceptionally competitive airport fees for airlines.”
Marín remarked that “Aena has collaborated with local authorities for some time, including the technicians of the Cabildo de Tenerife, in evaluating optimal solutions and designing all required actions”, expressing gratitude for this institutional partnership, echoed by President and CEO Maurici Lucena.
“Airports create wealth, promote exchange and diversity, and for their development, we need the backing and consensus of public institutions,” he stated.
Consequently, the South Tenerife airport plans to modernise its facilities and enhance its operational efficiency, by introducing new technologies and integrating the terminal architecture under a single roof, which will allow for increased natural light.
The initiative aims to establish the airport as a notable emblem of the island, reflecting the essence of the destination it caters to.
Progressive Project in Lanzarote
Meanwhile, the North-city of Tenerife project in La Laguna seeks to elevate service quality by improving the efficiency of airport operations while preserving the architectural uniqueness of the structure.
According to Javier Marín, “these initiatives will result in a significant enhancement in the quality and image presented to our users, which in turn will elevate the passenger experience during their transit through our facilities, whilst also transforming both airports into emblematic symbols of entry and exit to the island.”
The proposed actions “will be implemented while safeguarding the environment and adhering to the most stringent environmental standards available to us,” stated Lucena, who further emphasised that these investments “provide a clear demonstration of Aena’s dedication to solidifying the strategic significance of these infrastructures as drivers of connectivity, development, and growth for Tenerife and the Canary Islands.”
Lucena has also revealed that the designs for the projects set to be undertaken at the César Manrique-Lanzarote airport are “well underway.”
This initiative will encompass enhancements to the T1 and T2 terminals, along with improvements to the platform area.
