The locality of Tacoronte, renowned for its excellent wines, has officially named a road Calimocho, or Kalimotxo. This road links two key industries within the town: the Coca-Cola factory and the Regional Winery, a title that originated from a local anecdote.
The calimocho refers to the blend of cola and wine. As per the City Council’s account, “one day, someone from the street connecting both production centres made a light-hearted remark,” which has now evolved into a municipal initiative culminating in the street’s new name.
According to the tale, a resident quipped to his friends: “Have you noticed that Coca-Cola is just right next to the regional cellar?”
He then added, “It’s quite evident that we’re onto something significant here, for if we combine Coca-Cola and wine, the result is calimocho.”
This jest tickled many and garnered attention. It eventually reached the management of both the winery and the beverage factory, and they all embraced the notion of naming the street after this fusion.
The sign for Calimocho Street also features the Basque term, Kalimotxo, as “this beverage, which has been around for over fifty years, emerged in the last century” in the Basque Country, as stated by the City Council. It seems to be “the first street in Spain to bear such a bold name.”
Wine has long-standing traditions in Tacoronte, with its products forming part of the Tacoronte-Acentejo designation.
In comparison, Coca-Cola is a more recent establishment. This factory was set up in 1996 and now provides the Canary Islands with an annual supply of 120 million litres, sourced from the municipality’s underground springs.
