The autonomous representative Tamara Raya (Puerto de la Cruz, 1972) is set to be declared the new general secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife, in accordance with the Party’s Statutes, as she is the sole candidate to fulfil the necessary requirements.
The Insular Congress is scheduled for April 4 and 5 in San Miguel de Abona, which will be the Insular Executive Committee.
Raya highlighted on Tuesday that “once the deadline has passed, a new and exciting chapter will commence, paving the way for a promising political initiative for the island, which we aim to conclude at the upcoming island congress, alongside a dedicated team of women and men ready to address the issues that Tenerife faces, which we believe are numerous.”
He emphasised, “We will achieve this without impulsive decisions, guided by an ideological agenda brimming with achievable commitments.”
Under the leadership of Pedro Martín, who weeks ago declared he would not stand for re-election, the PSOE has emerged as the primary political force on the island. Following the local elections of 2023, it captured 19 of the 31 municipal governments.
Out of these, eight secured an absolute majority, seven a relative majority, and four participated in the government, while it was in opposition in another four, despite being the most voted party.
There have since been developments such as the motion of no confidence in Puerto de la Cruz.
Additionally, the PSOE has triumphed in all elections since the last municipal polls, garnering the most popular backing in the elections for the Cabildo and the Canarian Parliament (on the regional list), as well as in the Congress of Deputies and the European Parliament.
With a Diploma in Business Sciences from the University of La Laguna and a Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of La Rioja, Tamara Raya held several managerial roles in the private sector from 1999 to 2011.
She also served as a councillor in the City of Puerto de la Cruz (2011-2016) and as a National Deputy (2016-2023), and is currently a member of the Parliament of the Canary Islands. There, she is involved in the Committees for European Affairs and External Relations, Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth, as well as holding the position of Vice Chair for the Committees on Economy, Industry and Commerce and Territorial Policy, along with the Commission reviewing the Economic and Fiscal Regime of the Canary Islands.
