Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 4 Feb. (Europa Press) –

The regional deputy Tamara Raya (Puerto de la Cruz, 1972) is set to be declared the new general secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife, as stipulated by the Party Statutes, being the sole nominee who has put herself forward during the process of gathering the requisite guarantees.

The Insular Congress will convene in San Miguel de Abona on April 4 and 5, which will feature the Insular Executive Commission.

On Tuesday, Raya emphasised that “once the deadline concludes, an exhilarating new phase commences, marking the start of a hopeful political initiative for the island, which we will realise at the upcoming island congress, alongside a team of men and women eager to address Tenerife’s shortcomings, of which we believe there are numerous.”

Moreover, she pointed out in a statement, “we shall undertake this without impractical ideas, with a comprehensive ideological project filled with feasible commitments.”

Under the leadership of Pedro Martín, who declared weeks ago his intention not to seek re-election, the PSOE has established itself as the leading political force on the island, as following the 2023 local elections, it secured 19 out of the 31 local governments.

Of these, it gained absolute majorities in eight, relative majorities in seven, while being part of the government in four additional instances, and it found itself in opposition in another four, despite being the most voted party.

Subsequently, changes occurred, such as the motion of censure in Puerto de la Cruz.

Furthermore, the party has triumphed in all elections held since the last local ones, accumulating the most public support in the elections to the Cabildo, the Parliament of the Canary Islands (in the regional list), as well as in the Congress of Deputies and the European Parliament.

Tamara Raya holds a Diploma in Business Sciences from the University of La Laguna and a Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of La Rioja. She has operated in the private sector from 1999 to 2011 in significant roles.

Additionally, she served as a councillor for the City of Puerto de la Cruz (2011-2016) and a National Deputy (2016-2023), and she is currently a deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, where she is a member of the European Affairs and External Action Commissions, has relations with the Audit Office of the Canary Islands, as well as Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth, and serves as Vice President of the Economic, Industry and Commerce, Territorial Policy, and the Commission for the Revision of the Economic and Fiscal Regime of the Canary Islands.
