No one can deny the interconnectedness of our existence, nor the reality of a phenomenon that until recently was described as globalisation. The internet, instant messaging platforms, and social networks have fully realised and accelerated this process.
In mere seconds, almost at the speed of thought, information, news—whether genuine or misleading—spreads indiscriminately across the globe. The mysteries and issues that converge within the realms of the enigmatic and the unusual, particularly the abnormal, have taken on a more prominent role, often for the worse rather than the better.
The latest episode occurred in the islands, specifically on Tenerife, and notably from the La Orotava Valley to Icod de los Vinos, regarding the flurry of peculiar night lights observed above us. They have been seen, captured in photographs, and filmed. This has been happening consistently and quite noticeably since mid-December, which half in jest, half in seriousness, leads me to ponder whether Pope Noël or His Majesty The Magi left behind a multitude of flying pots during their festive visits.
MILIMETRIC TRAINING
These lights have been reported as mere illuminations performing unusual manoeuvres or congregating in variable numbers, consistently maintaining a millimetric formation, suggesting they are part of a system. The predominant suspicion leans towards drones. But let us dissect this further.
I initiated these reflections by mentioning interconnectedness and globalisation, because the phenomenon unfolding in northern Tenerife appears to mirror the sightings reported for months in regions such as the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, and various Spanish cities. The ufological community has coined the term ‘drugs’ to refer to these types of unidentified flying objects, a fusion of the words “drone” and UFO, implying that what is being observed falls within distinct terrestrial parameters.
Those of us who examine the UFO phenomenon through an analytical lens, notably in recent years, perceive that the term “drugs” may not have been invented by ufologists—its genesis feels more aligned with some social engineering department of the Pentagon—and that the frequency of such observations is less coincidental than we initially believed.
These sightings seem to be orchestrated as part of a design, meant to keep the populace and the media engaged in discussions and speculation, distracting them. The motives behind this? I truly have no idea, but it aids government bodies and agencies in managing the narrative surrounding UFOs.
Initially, these sightings met with denial, official silence, or at most, ambiguous responses. This gave rise to theories about alien probes or rival nations spying on airports, military installations, power plants, or traversing urban areas. Progressing from this, the US has officially acknowledged their existence… and furthermore, confirmed that they are authorised drones. They opted for silence to spark debate, only to then douse the flames of speculation by asserting that all this is entirely terrestrial, thus fuelling the deniers of the UFO phenomenon.
However, it also provides fodder for the conspiracy theorists who discuss smoke screens and pretexts to obscure the genuine extraterrestrial invasion we may be enduring. From my perspective, they control the narrative. This situation is rather bewildering, and globalisation is palpably present.
Lights in the village
Returning to La Orotava Valley, what have numerous individuals seen and recorded? We have already outlined it. Over the past month and a half, various nocturnal illuminations have been reported, which informants describe as peculiar. Witnesses claim to be well-acquainted with their local skies—the locations of environmental lights, flight paths, and the dominant stars—and they assert that what they observed is unusual.
The first known incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on December 13. A colleague of ours from the communications sector, located in Perdoma, relayed the event, where a young woman and her family witnessed and managed to film an intense green, flashing light, seemingly part of a structure. Whatever it was, it was positioned quite high and descended slowly while flashing, until it ultimately became invisible.
It is possible that a loss of perspective contributed to the illusion, should the light have been affixed to the underside of something moving. No noise accompanied it. She filmed it and contacted several others, but by the time they arrived, the light had vanished. The whole occurrence lasted less than a minute. The informant speculated it could perhaps have been a drone.
On January 18, another incident unfolded, also at night and from the same area. David GH informed us, sending along two videos. “My parents and I were able to see—” he explains—“from our terrace a light that ascended and descended repeatedly at the height of the Crown Mountain, in the Realejos. It vanished just beyond the mountain and then reappeared. I recorded it several times but never managed to capture any movement. Initially, it looked like a very bright star, yet it kept appearing and disappearing behind the mountain, which caught our attention.” This observation lasted for ten minutes, though they were unsure if it had been there prior to their noticing it.
Strange “stars”
The third instance occurred on January 29, and it garnered considerable media attention, as its protagonists shared one of their videos on social media. The couple, Leticia and Eduardo, witnessed multiple simultaneous strange lights from their home near the Humboldt viewpoint after 10:30 p.m. Growing accustomed to the nocturnal landscape, they focused on the areas of Realejos, San Juan de la Rambla, and La Palma, noticing some peculiar “stars”.
She zoomed in with a mobile device and realised that one of these “stars”, at a certain altitude, was actually a cluster of lights resembling purple rods. She observed two more lights, situated further away from the first in the direction of the sea, which transitioned from a perpendicular alignment to one moving in a circular motion around another. This was visible for approximately ten minutes. They dismissed all conventional explanations and questioned whether they were indeed drones, citing their size, distance, and altitude. Eduardo expressed his awareness of aircraft and satellites, maintaining a critical stance.
A fourth incident, linked to the previous one, was experienced by Manuel GB after 8:00 p.m. on the 29th, who observed from the botanist’s viewpoint towards Izaña and the Realejero mountain, a red light and another white light hovering above the mountains. These remained static, and after an indeterminate duration, disappeared. The quality of the footage was poor. The following day, the witness visited the Mirador de Humboldt and was fortunate enough to see another light shooting upwards from the crown region.
Drones? Did any local residents test a pot? Perhaps a professional company? If they are indeed drones, are they legal or illegal? Accidental sightings or deliberate attempts to create a viral sensation? And if they are not drones, what on earth are these peculiar lights? They definitely warrant our attention.
