Why did you become a DJ?
I’ve always had a passion for discovering new artists. My musical journey has evolved through various phases over the years. Unfortunately, I don’t currently play any instruments, so I opted to try mixing as a way to engage more interactively with music.
What is the origin of your artistic name?
My real name is Roshay. I derived my stage name by removing ‘ro’ from my name and incorporating the first and last letters of my surname.
If you were told: “Play whatever you wish” during a session, what would you choose?
I always play what resonates with me. I can assure you that your body will definitely move. I never confine myself to just one genre while mixing.
What song, artist, or music genre could be considered your guilty pleasure?
Crystal Castles! They are by no means a guilty pleasure—they’re a source of immense pride for me.
Conversely, what artist or song do you avoid playing in your sets?
Slickshota or anything associated with black rave culture.
What has been the most gratifying moment you’ve experienced while DJing?
When people dance without a care in the world. Seeing them leave behind their insecurities and immerse themselves in the music is all that matters. That energy is incredibly infectious and vital on the dance floor.
DJs often have peculiar habits. Do you have any quirks while mixing?
My facial expressions are very animated. I cannot contain them. If I make a bad mix, I can’t help but display a dramatically puzzled expression. Conversely, if the bass hits just right, my face scrunches up as if something unpleasant is nearby. This might very well lead to some wrinkles!
Apart from music and DJing, what are your hidden interests?
Languages, leather crafting, and fashion design.
Most DJs struggle to make a living from music. How do you sustain yourself?
I teach English and run my accessories brand, Doxhé.
