Deputies and spokespersons will understand “first hand” the realities of the host centres in two days. Santa Cruz de Tenerife 30 Jan. (Europa Press) –
Members of the Youth and Childhood Commission of the Congress of Deputies and the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, convened this Thursday in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to discuss a forthcoming decree that will enable the extraordinary dispersal of minors to occur across the autonomous communities. According to the Regional Executive, the meeting was “very positive” and “tension-free”, with a prevailing “awareness” among the political parties present regarding the current situation in the Islands.
Following this meeting in Tenerife, the deputies from the commission and spokespersons will tour Tenerife and El Hier on Thursday and Friday, meeting with various NGOs and groups that operate in the area, ultimately striving to obtain “as comprehensive a vision as possible” of the plight of migrants.
In comments to journalists, the regional executive spokesperson, Alfonso Cabello, emphasised the importance of this meeting, which aimed to provide a final update on the circumstances and to encourage “awareness” among all parties, that is to say, to understand “firsthand the reality confronting the entire reception system within the Canarian Autonomous Community, a system currently coping with nearly 6,000 minors, teetering close to overflowing and collapse.”
“We are advancing towards an agreement that facilitates the prompt distribution of 4,000 unaccompanied migrants currently residing in the Canarian Autonomous Community. Any agreement of this nature will necessitate approval from the Congress of Deputies, and we seek to ensure that the various political parties take a stance on it.”
3 or 4 days expected for the state lawyer’s ruling
Furthermore, he indicated that a ruling from the State Advocacy is anticipated regarding a proposed law or decree law, which would subsequently necessitate convening the political entities in the Congress of Deputies to facilitate a vote on the matter.
Regarding the meeting with the deputies and spokespersons of the Youth and Childhood Commission, Cabello characterised it as “very positive” and “tension-free”, where all political factions congratulated the government, and comprehensive information was shared among the various “political sensibilities” with respect to the diagnosis of the Canarian situation.
When questioned about the stance taken by the Popular Party during this meeting, Cabello clarified that the political group aimed to convey the necessity of “gathering as many supporters as possible” around the agreed text between the central and Canarian government, specifically regarding the obligations or conditions imposed on each autonomous community concerning the prompt distribution of migrant minors.
“The President conveyed to them firsthand the latest developments. With this transparency, we aim to manage the situation so that it can progress through the Congress of Deputies, not just to receive approval but to achieve a significant majority, thereby enabling the consideration of a structural and definitive solution to this issue,” he stated.
Thus, he affirmed that the ideal outcome “should not be an agreement of 176 deputies, but rather a comprehensive state agreement that incorporates the greatest number of political parties to subsequently address the second aspect of this issue, which is to provide a structural response to this problem.”
