The municipality of Los Realejos in Tenerife is set to establish a sustainable urban park in the Toscal Longuera region, designed to serve as a climate refuge during heatwaves.

This park will cover an area of nearly 1,900 square metres and will feature shaded areas, indigenous and adapted plant life, along with initiatives that enhance thermal comfort. This information was provided by the Department of Ecological Transition, which is investing 1.2 million euros in its development.

During the project unveiling, Ángel Montañés, the general director for the Fight against Climate Change for the Government of the Canary Islands, alongside the mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, explained that this green space will function as a carbon sink in one of the municipality’s key population hubs.

Montañés noted that the Government of the Canary Islands is supporting similar projects in Adeje and Guía de Isora, as well as on other islands, mentioning the recently revealed new green park in Santa Cruz de La Palma as an example.

Los Realejos’ mayor, Adolfo González, expressed that this investment represents “a crucial opportunity to enhance public recreational areas and establish our municipality as a leader in sustainability and in tackling the impacts of climate change.”
