“We are receptive to any agreement, as long as the numbers allow it; everything aligns, everything aligns,” stated Sebastián Roque yesterday, former councillor for public works and housing in Arona, one of the four members of Más por Arona who were dismissed by the Mayor, Fatima Lemes (PP). Despite the necessity to collaborate with ex-mayor Mena, who also dismissed them four years prior, Roque does not dismiss the possibility of a motion of censure alongside the PSOE and NC. However, this seems somewhat far-fetched, unless Mena – who has been smiling all week – chooses to step down.
“I do not believe that being left-leaning was the cause for Fatima Lemes’ decree of cessation because, if that were the case, it would pose a significant problem for Arona,” remarked the ex-councillor for public works and infrastructure, as well as hiring and housing. He suggests that the reasons should be sought elsewhere, clearly indicating that the Canarian coalition was aware of this decision, although the nationalists claim it is a unilateral action by the mayor, since, “if two out of three do not agree, do not break THE PACT. I have been around for five days, hearing numerous versions, including that infamous survey which rates us as the most valued group, overseeing the most influential areas of the Council, barring services.”
“If we were to base our judgement on the mayor’s comments regarding our areas, it should be noted that the most scrutinised have been those of CC, particularly services, including cleaning and security. If that were the rationale, it would be CC that ought to be ousted rather than Más por Arona, but we all understand that this is political, and there are other agreements at a higher level that we have become victims of.”
For Roque, the alliance between the PP and CC with Vox appears to be a done deal, even though it has yet to be confirmed. Nonetheless, the Mayor of Mxa does not eliminate the possibility, albeit one that is not popular, of forming a pact with the PSOE and New Canary Islands. “Next time, they won’t take us for fools,” he cautioned.
