The La Florida neighbourhood, situated in La Orotava, will host the Popular Puchero de la Florida on Saturday, January 25, which is one of the most prominent gastronomic events in the Canary Islands. This occasion, part of the festivities honouring San Antonio Abad and the Virgen de la Esperanza, has become a landmark due to its tradition and scale, attracting thousands of locals, visitors from other regions, and tourists annually.
Details of the event
The event will be held on the plot located in front of the football pitch in the La Florida neighbourhood. To ease transportation, a FREE GUAGUA SERVICE will be available from Sor Soledad Cobián Avenue, running every half hour between 10.00 and 18.00.
Additionally, Titsa will enhance its services on the Lines 345 and 373 to help alleviate potential traffic and parking difficulties.
Ingredients of the Puchero
The creation of this traditional dish from Canarian cuisine involves the entire municipality. This year, the event will require over 4,000 kilos of ingredients, sourced from local residents’ own cultivation. Key ingredients include:
- 700 kilos of pumpkin and chayotes
- 400 kilos of cabbages, 90 kilos of carrots, and beans
- 18 sacks of potatoes, 50 kilos of sweet potatoes, 80 kilos of chickpeas
- Pork ribs, bacon, and 250 kilos of gofio
- 20 kilos of pineapples and 50 leeks
- 20 kilos of garlic, 4 sacks of onions, and 15 kilos of parsley
Cooking will take place in 70 stainless steel cauldrons, each with a capacity exceeding 125 kilos, using DRIA RETAMA FROM THE TEIDE NATIONAL PARK as fuel. The cooking process, lasting at least two hours, becomes a spectacle for onlookers.
Entertainment will be provided
Before the tasting of the pot, the festivities will kick off with the 53rd cattle fair, followed by a mass and the traditional blessing of the livestock. There will also be performances by the Magec groups and separate classes, which will contribute to the festive atmosphere.
Since this Friday, local neighbourhoods and groups have been busy preparing from the sports centre at Leoncio Estévez school, where aprons have been distributed featuring the “Florida pot” logo.
The pot is just one of many events included in the celebrations in honour of the Patrons of Florida, which have been recognised as of tourist interest in the Canary Islands. The celebrations began in mid-January and will conclude on Sunday, January 26, with the 42nd pilgrimage, expected to gather Romeros and the public from across the island.
