The Cabildo of Tenerife has allocated 1.5 million euros to address the issues surrounding wastewater discharges and to regularise the municipal purification system in Buenavista del Norte.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, alongside the Minister for Natural Environment, Sustainability, and Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, and the mayor of Buenavista del Norte, Eva García, convened on Tuesday to evaluate the circumstances within the municipality.
Dávila emphasises in a statement that the Cabildo has bestowed a total of 1.4 million euros upon the council to regularise the municipal wastewater purification and discharge system, in addition to upgrading connections and vital components of its sanitation networks.
This amount is supplemented by an additional contribution of approximately 129,000 euros aimed at minimising water losses in the distribution network.
“Among the investments we are making in Buenavista del Norte, one of the most significant pertains to water security, aimed at eliminating discharges and enhancing the municipality’s water supply network. Furthermore, we also provide substantial support to the Irrigators of Funche to improve the desalination station and ensure agricultural irrigation,” Dávila elucidates.
Meanwhile, Eva García expressed her gratitude “for such a crucial investment which will enable us to resolve a longstanding water issue through the municipal treatment plant,” noting the necessity “to reduce water losses within the distribution network.”
The Cabildo is supplying 800,000 euros to the Funche Irrigators, who operate in Los Silos and Buenavista del Norte, to facilitate modifications to the project aiming to establish a seawater desalination plant for self-consumption with respect to agricultural irrigation.
In this context, Blanca Pérez clarifies that “this desalination facility was initiated by the farmers and will now receive funding from both the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands for its modification, thereby ensuring irrigation.”
Additionally, she stated that throughout the startup process of the desalination plant, “the Tenerife Island Water Council provided ongoing assistance to expedite the procedures due to the declaration of water emergency, which has enabled the farmers to have access to water for their activities.”
