In 2026, Tenerife Interurban Transport (TITSA) will introduce double-decker buses measuring 15 metres with a capacity of 110 seats on routes from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Los Cristianos, Adeje, Los Realejos, and Candelaria, in response to the heightened demand for these services.
The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, revealed during a press briefing on Monday that 70 double-decker buses are being procured for €25 million for long-distance routes, which are set to commence operations in the first quarter of 2026. Furthermore, an additional 104 buses are set to be added in April and will be operational throughout the year.
In presenting TITSA’s passenger statistics for 2024 and its plans in the realm of public transport, Dávila explained that the year 2024 concluded with over 82 million passengers, marking an increase of nearly 40 million passengers compared to the period before transport was made free.
“This is a significant figure and relates not only to the continuation of free public transport but also to the enhancement of the service,” stated the president, who added that 2024 is expected to see an increase of 12 million more travellers compared to the previous year, equating to an 18% rise.
This year, 66 new drivers will be recruited by TITSA, as indicated by the president, who emphasised that the public company has been conducting 500 additional daily journeys since the expansion of the free service and the assumption of leadership by CC in the Tenerife Cabildo.
Eulalia García, the Minister of Mobility for the Cabildo of Tenerife, stated that the acquisition of new buses aims to cater to the high-demand long-distance routes, specifically lines 110 and 112, as well as 108 and 122.
The buses to be deployed will be hybrids, contributing to an increase in the proportion of such vehicles within TITSA’s fleet, which comprises 320 buses, of which 30% are of this type.
