The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, dismissed the possibility of running for the general secretary of the PSOE of Tenerife this Monday, following Pedro Martín’s announcement over the weekend that he will not seek re-election.
“Right now, my focus is on La Laguna,” he stated during an interview with Radio Club Tenerife, as reported by Europa Press. He emphasised his “dedication” to the residents of the municipality and to a political initiative aimed at lasting at least until 2030.
He described this as his primary political “challenge”, acknowledging that while it can sometimes be “tempting” to pursue other ventures, he believes the PSOE in Tenerife is well-positioned with a “dynamic group” and “many individuals emerging strongly.”
Gutiérrez underlined the “significant contributions and efforts” accomplished by the PSOE during Pedro Martín’s leadership, managing to secure the “highest level of support” from the Tenerife populace in the recent elections. He also remarked that he communicated this decision within the party’s internal body, particularly at the last insular committee meeting.
“I share an excellent relationship with Pedro Martín and was aware that he had been contemplating his future at the helm of the party in the islands for several weeks. I am pleased that he made this announcement in a setting befitting his position,” he commented.
Regarding the re-election of Ángel Víctor Torres as general secretary of the Canarian PSOE, he expressed that Torres is the “most suitable choice” to guide the party in the Canary Islands. He is “confident” that Torres will present a “remarkable initiative” that will address “many concerns” and gain “the majority backing” from Canarian society.
He has correlated the “commotion” surrounding the judicial inquiries involving Torres to the “anxiety” and “fear” it triggers among “the right and far-right,” as “they lack a coherent project” for the Canary Islands.
“When discussing economic strategy, mobility, dependency, or education, conversations invariably lead back to Ángel Víctor Torres,” he pointed out.
