This Sunday, January 19, Tenerife showcases its traditions with two pilgrimages dedicated to San Antonio Abad, taking place in the municipalities of Los Realejos and Arona. Both celebrations intertwine culture, folklore, gastronomy, and religious ceremonies, establishing themselves as gathering spots for locals and tourists alike.
Los Realejos: Pilgrimage in Tigaiga
The village of Tigaiga, nestled in Los Realejos, kicks off its annual festive calendar with the pilgrimage in honour of San Antonio Abad. The day commences at 1:00 p.m. with a Eucharistic mass held at the hermitage of La Concepción, led by the Cañaveral de La Carrera Folkloric Group. Subsequently, the pilgrimage weaves through the town’s streets, accompanied by folklore groups, spontaneous celebrations, and festively adorned carts showcasing the image of the saint.
The blessing of livestock and other animals signifies the conclusion of the procession. Finally, the Arguayo Band orchestra will enliven the community festival from 5:00 p.m. onwards. The festivities in Tigaiga commenced on Thursday, January 16, with the installation of the traditional arch made of heather, fruits, and vegetables at the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de La Concepción, continuing with various religious and cultural activities leading up to the main event.
Arona: 400 Years of History and Tradition
Within the historic centre of Arona, the San Antonio Abad pilgrimage holds profound significance as it celebrates the 400th anniversary of the San Antonio Abad Hermitage, recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). The day will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a mass at the parish of the same name, featuring performances by the Parranda Chasnera. Municipal officials will be in attendance, including the mayor, Fátima Lemes, and the Festival Mayor.
The pilgrimage is set to commence at 12:00 and will navigate the streets of El Calvario, Domínguez Alfonso, La Luna, and Duque de la Torre, providing attendees with the opportunity to enjoy folklore displays and the customary blessing of animals. From 3:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m., the Wamampy and Los Ideales orchestras will keep the dance lively in the town square.
To facilitate access, the Arona City Council has arranged a special free bus service with departures from Los Cristianos and Las Américas at scheduled intervals.
