MADRID/ SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Canary Islands are forecasted to experience cloudy periods this Sunday, with a dominance of overcast skies in the northern regions of the eastern islands during the early morning and in the inland areas during the afternoon, as reported by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
There will be little variation in temperatures, which are expected to range from a maximum of 23 degrees in Tenerife to a minimum of 11 degrees in El Hierro. Winds will be light to moderate, variable in direction, with a prevalence of breezes.
Across the rest of Spain, maximum temperatures are likely to decrease this Sunday in the western and northeastern sections of the peninsula, as well as in parts of the Levant and central mountain regions, although there may be increases in Melilla, according to Aemet’s forecast, which has issued yellow warnings for cold, snow, and waves in nine autonomous communities.
Regarding minimum temperatures, rises are expected in Galicia and Catalonia, while a decrease will occur in the Balearic Islands and the southeast of the peninsula, with few changes anticipated elsewhere apart from the southwestern region. Frost will continue to affect the interior of the peninsula, particularly intense in substantial areas of the northern half as well as in parts of the southern plateau and Guadalquivir.
NINE SPANISH COMMUNITIES UNDER YELLOW WARNING FOR COLD, SNOW, AND WAVES
Consequently, Andalusia, Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, and Navarra are under yellow warnings for low temperatures. Castilla y León also has a yellow warning for snowfall, while Galicia is under warning for waves.
Storm Gabri is anticipated to create instability in the Balearic Islands, bringing cloudy or overcast conditions along with sporadic showers occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. These are expected to be more frequent in the northern part of Mallorca, and may be locally persistent, possibly falling as snow on higher peaks. They are not projected to reach the Pitiusas.
In addition, cloudy skies with a low chance of precipitation are also likely for this Sunday in northeast Catalonia, where light snow may occur in the eastern Pyrenees at altitudes of around 800/1,100 metres.
On the flip side, the arrival of an Atlantic front will lead to an increase in cloud cover from west to east, resulting in mostly overcast skies across the western half of the peninsula. Rainfall is expected in the northwestern third, particularly abundant in the west of Galicia, with a possibility of light rain in other parts of the extreme west.
Snowfall is anticipated in the mountains of the far northwest as well as in the northwest of the Northern plateau, with snow levels predicted to rise from 800/1,000 metres to 1,000/1,300 m, and with significant accumulations likely in the Cantabrian region and on the León plateau. Cloudy intervals will dominate in the Canary Islands.
As for wind conditions, moderate winds will prevail from the north on the eastern side of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, while southern winds will blow in the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia, with strong intervals expected on the western side. In other areas, winds will be weak, predominantly from the north in the Canary Islands and from the south and west in the remainder of the regions.
