Pedro Martín disclosed on Saturday, 18 January, that he will not seek re-election as secretary general of the PSOE in Tenerife during the next Island Congress in April.
The former president of the Cabildo of Tenerife explained in a video shared by him and the party that they have reached “a moment where processes of change should occur.” Martín has held the role of general secretary for the socialists since 2017 when he triumphed in the primaries in November.
He also served as mayor of Guía de Isora for five and a half terms, from 1995 to 2017, when he was succeeded in his position in the southern municipality of Tenerife by Raquel Gutiérrez.
In his announcement, Pedro Martín is dedicated to maintaining the “unity of the PSOE of Tenerife” and is stepping aside to allow his successor to arrive “with the enthusiasm that there is a renewed project in the general direction.”

Pedro Martín’s declaration
“Today, we held a meeting of the socialists of Tenerife. We need to prepare for the new Island Congress. Naturally, we approach this with joy and, I believe, pride, as the socialists of Tenerife have the strongest support on the island. We represent the largest number of municipalities that Tenerife encompasses. Moreover, if we consider ourselves collectively. In the Canary Islands,Tenerife is the island that enjoys the greatest electoral backing. We have reached a juncture where processes of change are necessary.
My intention is not to run again for the Insular General Secretariat. I believe we are entering a new phase where we must continue to foster those majorities, continuing to champion what I have supported throughout my tenure as general secretary, which is the cohesion of the PSOE of Tenerife, and now provide an opportunity for a successor after two terms over the last seven years.
I look forward to defending an important project, with the hope that a revitalised project emerges in the regional direction, supporting the best project for Tenerife, undoubtedly the best project for the Canary Islands and for our nation.”
