SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The PSOE of Tenerife will conduct its insular congress throughout April, where it will present as “the principal force”, being present in 19 of the 31 local administrations on the island. On this occasion, its general secretary, Pedro Martín, will not seek re-election, as sources close to the party have confirmed to Europa Press.
This Saturday, the political party commenced its congressional process for the selection of the new Insular Executive Commission, set to occur next April, as approved this Saturday in the Insular Committee of the Executive in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
During that Insular Committee meeting, Martín unexpectedly informed the socialist members in Tenerife of his decision not to pursue re-election as the general secretary of the party.
In a statement, in which Martín has not explicitly communicated this conclusion, the general secretary of the Tenerife socialists remarked that the PSOE on the island will come to the congress as the “dominant force”, noting that it holds sway in 19 out of 31 local councils.
Of these, eight boast an absolute majority, seven command a relative majority, and four are part of the governing body. In four others, the PSOE sits in opposition, despite being the most voted party.
A CHANGE AFTER 7 YEARS
“We have arrived at a juncture where processes for change are also necessary. My aim is not to seek re-election as the island’s general secretary,” stated Martín this afternoon in a video shared with journalists by the socialist party.
Martín added, “we are now entering a new phase, where we must continue to promote those majorities, advocating for the unity of the PSOE of Tenerife, which I have supported throughout my tenure as secretary general.”
He emphasised that this is the moment for “the opportunity of a transition”, after serving two mandates and seven years, with the hope that “the best initiative for Tenerife, undoubtedly for the Canary Islands and our country” is being upheld.
Pedro Martín also recalled that the Socialist Party in Tenerife has triumphed in every election since the last municipal elections, securing the highest popular support in both the Cabildo and the Parliament of the Canary Islands (on the regional list), along with elections to the Congress of Deputies and the European Parliament.
In the Senate elections, both Pedro Martín and Marta Arocha were elected from open lists, with Martín being the candidate receiving the most votes in the insular constituency.
Martín elaborated that “we are preparing a process already underway at the national level, which will also unfold in the Canary Islands next weekend with Ángel Víctor Torres. Following that process, we will initiate the Congress Insular de Tenerife, not only for appointing new Executive members but also to reinvigorate the Socialist Party’s agenda.”
“One only needs to observe the outcomes in town councils. With this strength, which is both organic and societal, we wish to approach the upcoming congress with a revitalised proposal, aiming to continue leading the political and social agenda of our island,” he concluded.
