The establishment of the Palliative Care Unit at Hospital del Sur a month ago “will ease the overwhelming situation that the Santa Cruz de Tenerife centre is currently experiencing,” stated its director, Miguel Ángel Benítez. This facility is expected to assist over a thousand patients from the area each year, based on estimates from the Ministry of Health. For instance, from the 8,827 consultations logged last year by users on the Island at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (Hunsc), 977 were from the South. In the short span of less than a month since its inception, it has already managed 21 consultations and is currently providing care for 14 patients admitted to hospital.
