SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE Jan. 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
In December 2024, Tenerife recorded 25,682 new contracts, representing an increase of 8.50% (2,013 contracts) compared to the same month in 2023. This figure accounts for almost half of all contracts signed across the Canary Islands last month (57,674), as per data from the Canarian Institute of Statistics gathered by the Tenerife Cabildo.
“The revitalisation of Tenerife is a clear reality. Upon our arrival at the Cabildo, the unemployment rate in Tenerife stood at 22%, and today it has diminished to 13%. We have transitioned from lagging behind to becoming the driving force behind job creation in the Canary Islands,” asserted the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, in her statement.
The island president emphasised that, while the figures for new contracts throughout the Canary Islands are encouraging, those specifically for Tenerife are even more impressive, as over half of the increase—2,013 contracts—occurred in Tenerife.
In fact, she noted, the annual change in contracts between 2023 and 2024 in Tenerife stands at 8.50%, exceeding the Canary Islands’ average of 6.92%.
At the regional level, contracts registered in the Canary Islands rose by 6.92% in December 2024, with 3,733 additional contracts compared to December 2023, culminating in a total of 57,674. In Tenerife, the new contracts totalled 25,682, reflecting an increase of 2,013 contracts from December 2023.
Dávila attributed “this achievement” to “a policy that fosters public-private collaboration, prioritising investment to stimulate and diversify economic activity,” alongside the enhancement of employment programmes aimed at groups facing employment challenges.
UNEMPLOYMENT DECREASES BY 4,600 INDIVIDUALS IN DECEMBER 2024
Concerning unemployment, there was a reduction of 11,501 people across the Canary Islands in December 2024 compared to the same period last year, with 4,600 of these occurring in Tenerife, which constitutes nearly 40% of the total decrease.
The president of the Cabildo noted that for 2025, 39 million euros have been earmarked in the island’s budget to promote employability and enhance job placement opportunities aimed at invigorating the labour market.
The decline in the number of job seekers has been considerable, as highlighted by the Cabildo, where the Canary Islands saw a reduction of 7,088 individuals in December 2024 compared to December 2023. Of this number, 2,369 were in Tenerife, bringing the current total to 93,441 people.
