A recent report conducted by the Securitas Direct Observatory, utilising data from the Crime Balance of the Ministry of the Interior, positions a city in the Canaries, namely Tenerife, as the second safest in the nation. This assessment examines three primary factors: theft, arson, and road safety, underscoring this city for its low levels of crime and positive atmosphere.
The city referenced is San Cristóbal de La Laguna, situated in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It has earned this ranking due to its commendable performance in aspects such as lighting, urban planning that encourages public presence, adequate signage, plentiful open areas, and the existence of retail outlets on the ground floors of buildings.
The analysis highlights Albacete as the safest city in Spain, exhibiting the lowest likelihood of theft alongside a well-regulated environment concerning fires and traffic mishaps.
Palencia, Ourense, and Salamanca round off the list of the five safest cities, with Castilla y León being the sole autonomous community featuring two locations within the ranking.
The most unsafe cities
Conversely, Barcelona leads the list of the most perilous cities, exhibiting a high rate of offences, particularly in districts such as El Prat. Following closely are Torrevieja and Marbella, both of which have experienced an uptick in crimes, especially in sectors comprising second homes.
Factors contributing to a secure city
The report outlines several features that bolster a city’s safety:
- Effective lighting: A brightly lit area acts as a deterrent to criminal behaviour.
- Urban design promoting social engagement: Public areas intended for community interaction mitigate the likelihood of crime.
- Explicit signage: Helps in accessing vital services and assists during emergencies.
- Retail activity in thoroughfares: A steady flow of individuals in shopping districts enhances security.
