Fátima Lemes Speaks Out: Breaking the Pact in Arona Explained

Sources from the Popular Party report that the mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes (PP), signed the decree for the dismissal of four councillors from Más por Arona (Dácil León, Pura Martín, Juan Sebastián Roque, and Luis García) this Wednesday, citing a loss of trust, as DIARIO DE NOTISOS previously reported.

From this point forward, a new political era commences in the most populous municipality in the South, which may see the involvement of the two Vox councillors (Naim Valerio Yánez and Melania Desiré) in governmental responsibilities.

The political parties PP, CC, and Vox will jointly hold a total of 12 councillors out of the 25 within the city council, falling short of the absolute majority required, which is 13 councillors. Consequently, they will need to exert considerable effort throughout the remainder of their term, according to the consulted sources.

Shortly after confirming the news, the councillor released a formal statement that reads:

“Politics, as I perceive it, is a service to the citizens. For this reason, I accepted to lead the candidacy for the Arona City Council. Our municipality should logically be the most significant in Tenerife and one of the wealthiest, yet we continue to endure an intolerable delay, stagnation in our development, and significant challenges that remain unaddressed.

I embraced the Mayorship of Arona to guide a complex team that is committed to advancing Arona to the level of development and welfare that our residents deserve.
At this point in the term, these objectives are not being fulfilled. I believe that teamwork in any domain relies on mutual trust and effectiveness. Unfortunately, such conditions are currently lacking in several of the areas assigned to the City Council that I lead.

We are dedicated to working for the welfare of our community, prioritising the general interest of the municipality over personal ambitions. From this standpoint, tactical manoeuvres, the political interests of parties, or anything apart from the requests and needs of the citizens do not concern me: we need actions, projects, and solutions to the challenges that Arona demands.

In exercising my authority, and in agreement with the other members of the government group, I have opted to revoke the delegations previously held by members of Más Por Arona.

This decision results from the aforementioned loss of trust and significant dissatisfaction with how the responsibilities I assigned to the councillors in these areas have been executed. Additionally, it reflects the urgent necessity to change the direction of this City Council, as I firmly believe there is no time to waste in transforming Arona into the municipality we rightfully deserve.

This reorganisation of governmental areas will entail the appointment of new managers, a decision I will announce soon, alongside a programme of actions for each department, aiming to be realised during the remainder of the term.

For this Mayor’s Office of Arona, there has been no other commitment since the beginning other than hard work, complete dedication, and the determination to advocate for and tackle the solutions and challenges faced by our municipality, which has been overlooked for numerous years, much like the entire south of Tenerife.
