The University of La Laguna (ULL), having approved ten roles from assistant to doctor, which finalise the 63 in the Maria Goyri programme, expressed its concerns on Monday regarding the delays in processing new contracts managed by the Government of the Canary Islands.
The Governing Council of the University of La Laguna made the decision to approve these last ten roles during an extraordinary session held this Monday.
This marks the completion of the 63 positions in the programme overseen by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. However, 53 positions that were previously approved in July “are facing delays of six months within the Department of Universities,” adding to 47 roles for associate teaching personnel and another 49 positions in the 2023 Public Employment Offer, all of which are experiencing delays ranging from three to six months.
In total, 149 teaching roles are affected, pending the necessary reports from the regional government, with these delays impacting the planned processes for the beginning of the academic year, surpassing 300 vacancies.
Alfonso Ruiz, the vice-rector for Teaching and Research Personnel, indicated that this pattern of delays in the authorisation of calls “has never been encountered before,” adding that rectifying this issue in the approval of the calls will involve “a substantial amount of work” within the university to ensure proper coverage.
“Nevertheless, based on recent discussions with the Department of Universities, it appears that the publication of this set of roles is imminent,” he remarked.
Francisco García, the rector of the University of La Laguna, noted that the “unjustifiable delays” from the Ministry need to be addressed, which places the university in a “very challenging situation”, irrespective of the fact that the institution itself must be more efficient internally, areas “in which it has been working and will continue to do so.”
