An investment exceeding 6.5 million euros will enable the Cabildo to enhance and refurbish the waterfront stretching from Plaza Unterhaching to Puerto Colón in Adeje, alongside upgrading the Promenade of Las Vistas Beach in Arona. This announcement was made yesterday by the island’s vice president and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso.
The investment allocated for the Promenade at Playa de las Vistas (Los Cristianos) is 3,818,630 euros, aimed at widening the pathway and establishing a more direct link to the beach. The entire paving, street furniture, and landscaping will be refreshed, with improvements made to all facilities.
The initial phase of the refurbishment of the waterfront between Plaza Adejera de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón involves the renovation of a promenade that extends along Costa Adeje, an area renowned for its high tourist traffic and numerous hotels and recreational infrastructures. The project aims to address the existing issues of promenade fragmentation, providing it with continuity and clarity for pedestrians while creating direct beach access. Additionally, new leisure areas featuring shade and vegetation will be constructed utilising suitable materials and modern furnishings, alongside the renovation of existing facilities. This intervention amounts to 3,347,977 euros.
The Highest Tourist Density
On December 18, the Island Government Council officially ratified the Island Tourism Strategy and Regeneration Programme (PIER) for 2024-2027, which includes an initial investment of 18 million euros. This programme encompasses eight significant projects in Arona, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, Santiago del Teide, and San Miguel de Abona. Lope Afonso underscored that these areas collectively host 120,970 accommodation units, amounting to “more than 90% of the available beds and the highest tourist density,” which ultimately “causes increased wear and tear on the space.” The regional Tourism official reiterated that “the Cabildo is committed to enhancing the quality of areas that support the tourist destination and to making them appealing, thereby improving the current conditions present in certain environments.”
“These are spaces requiring renovation and updates with sustainability in mind.”

The vice president asserted that the Cabildo “is at the forefront of regenerating tourist spaces in Tenerife alongside the local councils.” Regarding the works in Adeje and Arona, “these are areas longing for renovation and updates informed by sustainability principles, promoting pedestrian mobility, renewing urban furniture, and creating shaded zones for enhanced comfort and livability, making them suitable for residents’ enjoyment. One of our goals is to transform these spaces into a “magnet for private investment in their vicinity, thereby enhancing quality perceptions, which is a tool that facilitates attracting greater spending at the destination and amplifies the profitability of touristic activities.”
Afonso emphasised that “the initiatives are intended to be all-encompassing and address distinctive zones within the municipalities’ urban fabric.” He described the Island Tourism Strategy and Regeneration Programme as a crucial document for renewing the image and offerings of these municipalities across the island. “We are committed to fostering the regeneration of Tenerife’s tourist areas.”

The Mayors
José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Mayor of Adeje, stressed the necessity of cooperation among administrations “to ensure that services and infrastructures meet the expectations of the citizens.” The mayor advocated for “the ongoing improvement of the municipality for those who reside here, while adapting to the needs of visitors and the principal sector underpinning our economy.” Rodríguez Fraga explained that the proposed actions are “essential projects, including the enhancement of the waterfront between Plaza de Unterhaching and Puerto Colón.” The meeting also allowed for discussions on future topics of significant interest to all parties involved.
Fatima Lemes, the mayor of Arona, expressed that “the project for the Las Vistas Beach promenade will signify a pivotal change for Arona, not solely in terms of quality but also in the comprehensive renewal strategy for the entire area that will benefit both visitors and residents. It will represent a transformation in the southern region and for the island, as Arona is a major reference point. “We will continue enhancing Los Cristianos, which is the tourism hub of the municipality.” Improvements to the surroundings, gardens and accessibility, combined with a commitment to sustainable and environmental development in the area “is a significant advancement for Las Vistas,” added the Arona councillor.
The insular Minister of Commerce and Business Support, Krysten Martin, accompanied the vice president of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, during their visit yesterday to Arona and Adeje, to assess the significant advantages that the implementation of these enhancements will bring to local commercial activities.
