Telecare Intervention Saves Newborn from Respiratory Arrest in Tenerife

A father rescued his newborn daughter who was experiencing respiratory failure in the early hours of Friday, January 3. The man was able to revive the infant due to the assistance provided through telemedicine by Betsy Álvarez, the coordinating physician, and Alexis Hernández, the nursing coordinator of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), part of the public company Gestión de Servicios para la Salud y Security in the Canary Islands, which is under the oversight of the regional Government’s Health Department.

The incident, disclosed this Monday, transpired at 1:50 a.m. on Friday the 3rd, when the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 112 of the Canary Islands Government received a call for assistance concerning a woman who was delivering a baby at home in San Isidro, within the Granadilla de Abona municipality in Tenerife.

At the moment the father made the call, the mother of the infant, who was full term, was undergoing the expulsive phase of a breech labour.

After gathering the required information, the medical team working in the Tenerife emergency room provided essential instructions to assist with the delivery, confirming that the baby was in respiratory failure.

The father began resuscitating the infant and managed to turn the situation around, aided by the guidance given over the phone by the coordinating nurse, who noted the “focus and calmness” that the father maintained throughout, as stated by 112 in a report.

Shortly thereafter, the Local Police of Granadilla de Abona arrived at the residence, accompanied by two advanced life support ambulances from the SUC, one of which was equipped with full medical services.

The personnel from both advanced resources provided care to the newborn and the mother, proceeding to sever the umbilical cord.

Meanwhile, the medical team reported on the condition of both mother and child during the ambulance transfer, ensuring they were monitored at all times, en route to the Paediatrics and Gynaecology units of the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital, where they arrived in stable condition.
