In Spain, more than 8,000 municipalities exist, according to statistics from the INE. While some have garnered significant recognition, others remain largely unnoticed by tourists. These lesser-known locales feature in the esteemed magazine Travel in its compilation of undervalued towns in Spain.

One such place is one of the most underrated towns in Tenerife, notable for its calmness and lack of large crowds, despite hosting one of the island’s most popular festivals.

Even with the stunning landscapes and cultural wealth that define Tenerife, certain towns fail to attract the attention they merit. These areas have not shaped their economies around tourism and lack the necessary infrastructure to accommodate significant visitor numbers. This has allowed them to preserve a peaceful and authentic atmosphere, providing guests the chance to savour tranquillity free from the disturbances of mass tourism.

The town referred to is Los Silos, nestled in a hilly region of Tenerife, offering views over the Atlantic Ocean. Its position grants adventurers access to hiking trails and the opportunity to revel in nature at its finest. The area’s topography has supported an economy centred on agriculture and local trade, rather than tourism.

The residents of this town maintain traditions and lifestyles that have been handed down through the generations. The local architecture and urban design reflect its historical background, enabling visitors to gain firsthand insight into its social development.

Attractions

Among the highlights are the tranquil streets and sweeping vistas. The vicinity of beaches such as Puertito and Agua Dulce allows for delightful strolls without the throngs characteristic of other parts of the island.

Although these beaches are not the most frequented, they provide an excellent setting to appreciate the scenery and coastal serenity.

International Story Festival

The Los Silos International Storytelling Festival is a cultural occasion that unites storytellers and enthusiasts from diverse corners of the globe to honour oral traditions and narration in Tenerife. During this festival, workshops, presentations, and interactive sessions occur, giving attendees the chance to hear traditional and modern tales, engage in educational activities, and share experiences with storytelling experts.

Housed in Los Silos, the event aims to promote cultural exchange and creativity while preserving narrative techniques handed down through generations. Furthermore, it serves as a platform for both emerging and established storytellers to showcase their work, enriching the programme with various perspectives and styles.

As an annual event, the Los Silos International Storytelling Festival has become a significant attraction for cultural tourism in the area, welcoming visitors keen on oral literature, history, and culture, and offering a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich narrative heritage of the Canary Islands.
