The desire to explore life abroad has become increasingly prevalent among Britons, particularly within younger generations. According to the British Expat Report 2024 by Currencies Direct, a substantial 38% of individuals aged 25 to 34 are contemplating relocating overseas within the next five years, with 11% considering a more immediate move. Similarly, 36% of those aged 18 to 24 have expressed interest in emigration, with 10% open to moving abroad soon. These figures highlight a generational shift, where younger people are more open to embracing global opportunities.

In 2023 alone, approximately 532,000 Britons emigrated, reflecting a steady increase in the number of individuals choosing to leave the UK. This trend showcases not just a growing appetite for international living, but also a re-evaluation of what life abroad can offer compared to remaining in the UK.

Key Motivations for Moving Abroad

The report identifies several primary reasons behind this growing desire to emigrate:

  1. Improved Quality of Life
Nearly half of those considering a move (45%) cite a better quality of life as a significant motivator. This includes access to better healthcare, education, work-life balance, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  2. Escaping the Cost of Living Crisis
The rising cost of living in the UK, with increased housing expenses, utility bills, and day-to-day costs, has pushed 39% of potential emigrants to seek more affordable lifestyles overseas.
  3. Better Weather Conditions
For 37% of respondents, escaping the UK’s often dreary weather in favour of sunnier and more stable climates is a crucial factor.

These reasons indicate a broader trend where individuals are prioritizing their well-being, financial stability, and overall happiness by considering international relocation.

Professionals Leading the Way

Certain professions are more inclined toward moving abroad. Among these, individuals working in information technology (48%), healthcare (30%), and education (22%) are leading the charge. These industries often offer transferable skills and qualifications, making it easier for professionals to find work in other countries. Moreover, the growing demand for skilled workers in global markets provides added incentives for these professionals to relocate.

Regional Insights: Manchester Leads in Relocation Plans

Geographically, Manchester has emerged as a significant hub for potential emigrants. The report highlights that 35% of Manchester residents are contemplating a move abroad within the next five years, and 10% are planning to leave imminently. This indicates a regional hotspot where dissatisfaction with local conditions might be driving higher interest in emigration compared to other parts of the UK.

Preferred Destinations for British Expats

Europe remains the favoured destination for British expatriates, with France, Spain, and Portugal topping the list. The proximity to the UK makes these countries attractive, as it allows easier visits to family and friends—an essential factor for 36% of prospective emigrants.

Among these, Spain stands out as the top choice, thanks to its favourable weather, vibrant culture, and established British expat communities. Following Spain, Canada and Australia rank second and third, respectively, offering high standards of living and welcoming attitudes toward immigrants.

Challenges and Planning Considerations

While the desire to move abroad is strong, the report emphasizes the importance of thorough research and planning. Potential emigrants must consider a range of factors before making the leap, including:

  • Housing and Property Markets
Understanding the local property landscape is critical for securing affordable and suitable accommodation.
  • Quality of Life
Evaluating factors like healthcare, education systems, and work-life balance in the target country is essential.
  • Well-being and Social Integration
Assessing opportunities for building social networks and adapting to a new culture is vital for long-term satisfaction.

Additionally, financial planning, such as understanding currency exchange rates and managing international money transfers, plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition.
