Santa Cruz de Tenerife concluded 2024 with 105,576 new agreements, representing an increase of 11.2% compared to the preceding year, equating to 10,617 more than in 2023. This information was revealed yesterday by the municipality’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, who emphasised that “of the total contracts executed in the Tenerife capital during 2024, 33% were permanent”, and further stated that “the initial months of the year, from January to March, accounted for a significant portion of this type of employment, constituting over 37% compared to temporary positions.”
In this context, Bermúdez elaborated that “this year, the months of April, July, and October have emerged as periods with the most substantial year-on-year growth in employment, with increases exceeding 27%,” and highlighted that “in December, there were 8,585 new contracts in the capital, reflecting a year-on-year rise of 8.8%.”
Carmen Pérez, the CEO of the Development Society, noted that “in December, 28 out of every 100 contracts signed in the Tenerife capital were of a permanent nature, which is an important statistic to consider.” Regarding the most sought-after roles in the past month, she indicated that “cleaning staff, retail salespeople, and waiters accounted for 32% of the total contracts signed.”
Moreover, Pérez reported that “we also end 2024 with a notable reduction in unemployment figures, marking December as the month with the least number of unemployed since 2008”, stating that the total number of unemployed individuals in Santa Cruz “is 17,388 people, which signifies a decrease of 7.1% compared to December 2023, translating to 1,321 fewer individuals, whilst there was also a decline of 1.7% compared to the previous November representing 292 fewer people.”
Tourist Activity
Pérez explained that “this favourable trend in unemployment is occurring both in Santa Cruz and throughout the rest of the Island and is significantly influenced by the boost in tourist activity.” Examining this data by gender, she remarked that “the reductions in unemployment in Santa Cruz are applicable to both men and women, though it is accurate to say that the female demographic continues to make up 55.7% of the total unemployed population in Santa Cruz.”
“From the Santa Cruz City Council and the Development Society, we shall persist in fostering initiatives and projects that generate employment in the capital, benefitting our local business landscape,” Pérez stated, additionally declaring that “our aim is to continue along the established path, striving to sustain this positive trend in the Santa Cruz labour market into 2025, characterised by continuous hiring growth and decreases in the unemployment numbers within the municipality.”
The employment situation report compiled by the Santa Cruz Development Society predicts that for this January, the number of contracts executed in the capital of Tenerife will remain above 8,000, whilst unemployment is anticipated to stay at the levels observed as the year concluded.
