The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, via the Autonomous Organisation of Festivals and Recreational Activities (OAFAR), announces the esteemed musician and composer Wilfrido Vargas, a global icon of merengue, as the initial artist confirmed for the forthcoming edition of the Carnival. The Dominican artist will perform on the second day of the carnival, slated for March 8, with additional artists set to be announced by the council in the coming weeks.

Wilfrido, who has left a lasting legacy on Latin music with hits like “El Africano”, “Abusadora”, and “El baile del perrito”, now becomes part of the 2025 carnival lineup, which will feature prominent international performers from February 28 to March 9. The artist took the opportunity to express, “I eagerly await seeing you on March 8. I will be bringing the merengue and the celebration.”

This declaration signals the beginning of a series of confirmations that will soon be unveiled, which, according to the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, “will captivate everyone,” underlining that “the artists in the upcoming edition authentically embody the spirit of the ‘Santacrucero carnival.’” Additionally, the Festival Councillor, Javier Caraballero, believes that “Wilfrido Vargas is a trusty choice for carnival enthusiasts who have undoubtedly danced to his tunes during carnival nights.”

Carnival 2025, commencing on January 31 with the opening gala, thus marks its first confirmed artist, Wilfrido Vargas, a leading figure in Latin music globally.
