The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, is pleased that the Cabildo is finally investing in his municipality. He emphasized this during a recent visit by the vice president of the Cabildo de Tenerife and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, who happens to be his brother, to the tourist city. “After several years without any investment from the Cabildo in Puerto de la Cruz, we are now receiving adequate funding through the Department of Tourism to undertake significant works such as the comprehensive renovation of Aceviño Street,” announced Leopoldo Afonso.
Lope Afonso attended the tourist city alongside the Minister of Municipal Cooperation and Housing, Sonia Hernández, and the Minister of Primary Sector and Animal Welfare, Valentín González (all from the PP), to assess various initiatives the insular Corporation is executing in the tourist city related to tourism, municipal cooperation, fishing, and culture, among other areas. Lope Afonso noted that the insular Corporation “promotes the revitalisation of the tourist spaces in Puerto de la Cruz and other initiatives in collaboration with the Portuense City Council with a investment of 6 million euros.” In addition to the mayor, the City Council was also represented by the Councilor for Sustainable City and Urban Agenda, David Hernández, and the Councilor for Tourism and Culture, Desirée Díaz.
Lope Afonso highlighted that the renovation of Aceviño Street is “a clear example” of the initiatives that the Cabildo is undertaking through the Island Strategy and Tourist Regeneration Plan, which “aims to recover spaces, not just aesthetically but also functionally, enhancing pedestrian mobility and addressing issues within the urban fabric to ensure this tourist area aligns with our commitment to improving quality and simultaneously aiding in the revitalisation of the area from a commercial and complementary perspectives.” The Cabildo also provides a “strong support” to Puerto de la Cruz in municipal cooperation, fishing, and culture, notably with the definitive acquisition of the Casa de Los Agustinos.
The project on Aceviño Street is complemented by the paving of José María del Campo Llarena Avenue, representing a total investment of 4,286,039 million euros. In terms of Municipal Cooperation, Lope Afonso pointed out that the Cabildo is undertaking the adaptation and expansion of the sanitation systems in the town centre and other areas of the tourist city, with a total investment of 1,287,686 euros, as well as improvements to the partial sanitation network of the La Paz Urbanisation at a cost of 1,936,990 euros.
The first deputy mayor, David Hernández, underscored that the investment from the Cabildo “is a reality,” showcasing it as a “tangible reflection of what the new agreement signifies for Puerto de la Cruz, emphasising that it was not born from mere whimsy but rather aims to bring critical investment to the city. For this, I extend my gratitude to Lope Afonso and the councillors for their dedication to ensuring this collaboration benefits all residents of the municipality.
