Seizure of 350 Kilos of Illegally Sold Avocados in Tenerife

The Civil Guard announced on Friday that agents from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) have confiscated 350 kilograms of avocados that were being sold unlawfully at an undisclosed location in Tenerife.

The seized avocados, of the Hass variety, were prepared for sale and distribution in a perishable goods establishment but lacked the traceability labels that indicate the food’s origin, its legitimate source, and whether it is fit for consumption.

The officers sealed and secured the 350 kilograms of avocados as they did not meet health regulations, and the individuals responsible for the premises could not prove that they were safe for consumption or disclose their source.

Seprona personnel filed reports for infractions against the agri-food quality law, classified as minor and serious violations, due to the absence of appropriate labelling and documentation that ensures product traceability, which is crucial for safeguarding consumer health.

The Civil Guard outlined that minor infringements may be met with a warning or a fine of up to 4,000 euros, serious violations could incur fines ranging from 4,001 to 150,000 euros, while very serious breaches could attract fines between 150,001 and 3,000,000 euros.

In instances of failure to fulfil financial obligations related to the financing of the governing body, the amount of the fines may rise to 30% of the outstanding payment, according to the statement.
