Over 400 Toys Seized in Tenerife Bazaar Security Operation

The Civil Guard has confiscated 431 toys from a bazaar located in Granadilla de Abona, in the southern region of Tenerife, due to safety concerns or labelling deficiencies.

Among the confiscated items, 102 toys were found to be missing the CE marking, which ensures compliance with essential safety standards within the European Union. The lack of this designation on toys may expose children to “a significant risk of choking, poisoning, or injury,” as per the Civil Guard’s explanation.

Other toys have been removed as a precautionary measure due to the absence of labelling or warnings in Spanish, as well as the lack of a reference name and contact details for the manufacturer, importer, or seller in many instances.

Following the inspection, a report was prepared informing the premises owner of various breaches of Royal Decree 1205/2011 concerning toy safety. The fines for less serious violations range from 150 to 10,000 euros.

The General Directorate of Commerce and Consumer Affairs of the Canary Islands is tasked with administering the aforementioned penalties.

The Civil Guard advises consumers to ensure that toys display the CE marking directly on the item; that the product is identifiable by name and brand, along with the manufacturer’s or importer’s details, as well as the batch, series, or model number being clearly visible.

Furthermore, they emphasise the importance of adhering to the manufacturer’s guidelines regarding the appropriate age for use, weight considerations, and whether adult supervision is recommended.
