The Adeje City Council concluded the year 2024 by reaching an agreement to initiate the administrative process for awarding a new contract for “municipal waste collection and transportation services, street cleaning, and the upkeep of other public spaces.” Notable enhancements include an increase in personnel from 171 to 209 professionals and a complete overhaul of the vehicle fleet, integrating a significant number of hybrid and electric vehicles.

The municipal government’s proposal, led by José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, was passed with the support of the socialist group (PSOE), the Canarian Coalition, and the Popular Party, alongside abstentions from Unidas Podemos and Vox. This open tender is anticipated to reach a conclusion in the first half of 2025.

The annual expenditure for the contract is set to exceed 10 million euros. The technical requirements for companies wishing to partake in the bidding process include, in addition to extending services to seven days a week in designated areas, exceptional actions during any form of emergency. These requirements also cover the cleaning of ravine beds in urban regions, the removal of algae from beaches, the clearance of ditches and local roadways, as well as the implementation of a specialised system for cleaning roadways and pavements that ensures the immediate removal of dirt and waste, tailored to the specific needs of each neighbourhood in Adeje.

The primary aim of this new contract is to enhance the quality of all services, thereby increasing both coverage and frequency of operations.

The specifications for this procedure underscore the importance of preserving all jobs held by the current contractor, improving working conditions, and augmenting the workforce by nearly 20% in the forthcoming years.

The councillor in charge of Good Governance, Epifanio Díaz Hernández, who, along with the technical team, prepared the specifications and is overseeing the process, emphasised that with this new proposal, “we aim to address the cleaning challenges that we acknowledge exist within the municipality,” affirming that the governing body recognises the need for service improvement and that certain situations require rectification; “This is our new significant challenge, and we will persist until we accomplish it.”

“It is one of the most important services we have”

The mayor of Adeje highlights that “this is one of the most crucial services the municipality provides and which we have historically valued.” In this regard, he further expressed, “it is vital that the service is effective, efficient, and meets the community’s needs, which increasingly demands more attention.”
