This Friday, the governing council of the Cabildo de Tenerife sanctioned the tender for the renovation project and restoration of Altavista refuge on Teide, which has been closed since 2020.

The undertaking will encompass the establishment of a water treatment facility, a photovoltaic energy system, and enhancements aimed at improving energy efficiency and thermal insulation. This project will require an investment of 1.5 million euros and is expected to be completed within five months following the awarding of the contract.

The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, has remarked that this represents “a strategic initiative to ensure the safety of individuals and the preservation of the area.”

The upgrade and restoration efforts for the shelter, situated at 3,260 metres above sea level, will involve refurbishing and optimising the current rooms within the existing structure, enhancing its operational functionality, while also improving insulation and ventilation, as outlined by the Cabildo in a statement.

Additionally, the module attached to the ancillary building on the current concrete platform will be refurbished to accommodate the battery and pressure pump systems for fire protection.

Furthermore, measures to bolster energy efficiency will be adopted, and PVC piping will be installed to channel wastewater produced in the shelter to the treatment facility, which has a capacity for 25 equivalent inhabitants.

In another development, the plenary session of the Tenerife Cabildo has decided to nominate journalist and author Fernando Delgado, swimmer Michelle Alonso, and researcher and populariser Juan de la Cruz for the Canary Islands 2025 Awards in the categories of Literature, Sports, and Popular Culture, respectively.
