Discover Tenerife’s Hidden Gem: Spain’s Own “Machu Picchu” Unveiled!

Machu Picchu is one of the most renowned indigenous settlements globally. Its exceptional state of preservation, despite the centuries that have elapsed since the Incas constructed it before the 15th century, attracts as much interest as its positioning: in the southern part of Peru, within the Andes mountain range at 2,430 metres above sea level, and encircled by perpetually verdant summits.

It is precisely this location amidst the mountains that has reminded a popular TikToker of a village in Tenerife, leading him to coin the term “The Spanish Machu Picchu”: Masca.

David García, a travel-centric content creator, claims that the similarity to the Inca settlement emanates from the fact that it is “concealed between profound ravines and cliffs.”

“Indeed, The route to Masca alone is worth the journey. Navigating its narrow, winding roads that hug the massive stone walls is an experience,” states the TikToker, who admits that “the nickname is somewhat presumptuous,” adding that “it is undoubtedly one of the must-visit sites if you are exploring the island of Tenerife.”

The allure of the village

Masca is situated in the northwestern section of the island, nestled within the Teno massif, in the rural park that shares its name. This charming hamlet lies 17 kilometres from the urban area of Buenavista del Norte and at an estimated altitude of 680 metres.

The landscape surrounding Masca is distinguished by its steep ravines and stunning cliffs that cascade into the Atlantic Ocean, enveloped by lush flora and meandering roads. It is historically known to have been a sanctuary for pirates. Furthermore, the village is recognised for its traditional architecture, which, although much of it is relatively modern, exemplifies some of the finest rural architecture within the Canary Islands.

Among Masca’s attractions are the parish church of Our Lady of the Conception, an ethnographic museum, and a nature centre. The village also boasts small shops, bars, and restaurants, allowing visitors to savour the locality’s charm.

Masca is especially famed among hiking enthusiasts for a well-trodden route that meanders through the ravine, blending natural splendour with breathtaking vistas, culminating at a secluded beach at the path’s terminus.
