The National Police has added a specialised vehicle known as the Mobile Border Unit to its fleet, designated to be utilised by officers at the maritime border post in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Consequently, this new specialised vehicle provides the capability for border officials to reach any location on the island, including smaller islands, to conduct on-site entry checks on individuals arriving from third countries who wish to enter Schengen territory.
In a statement, the Police clarified that the Mobile Border Unit will enhance the agents’ autonomy of movement, functioning at various docks within the port of Santa Cruz and Granadilla de Abona, as well as at several marinas across the province.
Furthermore, it will offer increased adaptability in executing their duties, as it enables the rapid establishment of a border control station in areas where their presence is deemed essential.
The vehicles are outfitted with a computer terminal facilitating consultations with national databases and Schengen information systems, thereby allowing for the verification of passenger identities.
Additionally, it features a document verification system, a fingerprint scanner, and a tool for the automatic detection of counterfeit documents, amongst other equipment.
