The Cabildo of Tenerife has today, Tuesday, December 24, closed access routes to the Teide National Park via La Esperanza (TF-24), La Orotava (TF-21), and TF-38 (access from Chío) due to the presence of patches of ice and hail on the roads. This closure will remain in place until conditions are deemed safe for traffic.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, stated that “overnight rainfall resulted in ice forming on the roads, prompting the closures to ensure public safety.”
In addition, the Minister of Highways, Dámaso Arteaga, remarked that “the teams in the Highways area are actively working to clear the roads. Yesterday (Monday the 23rd), we managed to reopen them in the afternoon thanks to their efforts, and they are currently on-site. Our aim is to eliminate the ice and reopen the routes throughout the day, but at present, they remain closed until it is safe to do so.”
The Cabildo of Tenerife also closed access to Teide last Sunday (the 22nd) due to snowfall and rain, which led to the formation of ice on the roads. While the Highways area worked on clearing these patches yesterday (Monday the 23rd) and managed to reopen them, further rainfall early today has necessitated a renewed closure.
Advice for the public:
Avoid travelling to the Teide National Park whilst the roads are closed.
Check for updates on road conditions through the Road Information Centre of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.
Exercise extreme caution if adverse weather persists in other regions of the island.
The Cabildo emphasises the importance of adhering to signs and instructions from security personnel to avert incidents.
We appreciate the cooperation of all drivers and visitors in these circumstances.
