The City Council of Los Realejos has reintroduced the Camello taxi initiative, which will run from yesterday until Sunday, January 5, 2025. This municipal programme provides complimentary transportation during this time across the five Open Commercial Zones (ZCA) of Toscal Longuera, Icod el Alto, La Cruz Santa, San Agustín and Realejo Alto.
The mayor, Adolfo González (PP), stated yesterday that “this marks the ninth edition of this initiative, which has cemented its place as a beneficial service, enabling the local government to provide greater convenience and attractions for Christmas shoppers in the shops that embody the spirit of our municipality. This service alleviates issues related to mobility, parking searches, or costs when arriving nearly at the entrance of stores, while also promoting public transport as a cost-effective and efficient solution.”
Another advantage of the Camello taxi service involves direct support for the transport sector within the municipality. It guarantees that taxi drivers participating in this initiative receive a series of fares funded by the council, simultaneously fostering collaboration within the local commercial and economic landscape.
Once again, designated start and waiting points have been established at various locations in the ZCA, where customers can board these shared taxis. They can also utilise these vehicles if they encounter them on the designated routes, provided that there are available seats at that moment and the driver is willing to make a specific stop.
Line 1, marked in green, operates between Icod el Alto and Realejo Alto, while line 2, indicated in fuchsia, follows a circuit connecting La Cruz Santa, Realejo Alto, San Agustín and Toscal Longuera.
To recognise these Camello taxis, the Departments of Commerce and Transport have once again issued magnetic badges that are attached to the front hood of each vehicle, displaying a royal crown alongside the words ‘Camel taxi’. Identifying flags or barriers have also been placed at the respective stops to indicate the designated line and route.
The service will be available during the regular opening hours of local shops, specifically from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. On December 24 and 31, as well as January 5, services will only be provided during the morning hours.
