Teide Access Temporarily Halted Due to Icy Road Conditions

On Tuesday, the Tenerife Cabildo restricted access to Teide National Park for vehicles via La Esperanza (TF-24), La Orotava (TF-21) and TF-38 (access from Chío) due to the accumulation of ice and hail on the roads.

This closure will remain in effect until conditions are deemed safe for traffic, as outlined by the Cabildo in an official statement.

During the night, rainfall resulted in icy patches forming on the roads, leading to the closure being implemented to ensure public safety.

Consequently, highway maintenance crews are actively working to clear the roads.

According to the Cabildo, the goal is to eliminate the ice and facilitate the reopening of the roads throughout the course of the day; however, they currently remain closed until they are confirmed to be safe.

The Tenerife Cabildo had previously closed access to Teide last Sunday (the 22nd) due to snowfall and rain, which had also led to icy patches on the roads.

On Monday the 23rd, the Highways department began to clear the icy roads, leading to their reopening; however, renewed rainfall early today has resulted in the roads being closed once more.
