The spokesperson for the Canary Coalition (CC) in the Congress of Deputies, Cristina Valido, emphasised on Monday the continuation of free public transport on the islands for the entirety of 2025 and the yearly extension of aid for those impacted by the volcano on La Palma as “two new aims achieved to fulfil the Canarian Agenda” which the Canarian nationalists established with the Government of Spain.
In this regard, Valido insisted that the Council of Ministers sanction via decree “these measures that are crucial for all the Canary Islands, as it has been evident that the Government will lag in processing the State Budgets.”
In her evaluation of the extensions of free public transport and assistance for the island of La Palma, Cristina Valido further pointed out the inclusion in the decree ratified by the Council of Ministers of the State’s endorsement for the prolongation of the realisation of the Canary Islands Investment Reserve (RIC) for the construction and refurbishment of housing within the archipelago.
“As previously agreed in the Canarian Agenda, this fresh decree from the Government of Spain serves to meet a series of essential objectives that are non-negotiable for the nationalists,” asserted the spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition in the Congress of Deputies.
Indeed, during the plenary session of Congress last Wednesday, Cristina Valido had already articulated directly to the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, the nationalists’ demand for sustained support in Madrid with “assurances that all measures and agreements which can only be addressed through this year’s decrees”, since “these are critical conditions to continue discussions” at a round table overseeing the political work regarding the aims of the Canarian Agenda that both parties have confirmed for the forthcoming January.
In this setting, Cristina Valido now anticipates that during the meeting of the monitoring table of the ‘Canarian Agenda’, which is another of the claims that are not going to “be delayed indefinitely,” the spokesperson for the Canary Coalition suggested, will review the timeline for the objectives established in the current legislative period.
“We will persist in our efforts to ensure the Government of Spain adheres to all its commitments because otherwise, we fail to understand the purpose of defending the overarching interests of the Canary Islands,” remarked Cristina Valido in a statement.
