The Cabildo of Tenerife has closed traffic access to the Teide National Park via La Esperanza (TF-24), La Orotava (TF-21) and TF-38 (access from Chío) on Sunday, December 22, due to the presence of icy patches and snow on the roads. This closure will remain in place until it is deemed safe for vehicles.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, remarked that “this second day of winter presents us with a snowy Teide that can be admired from afar, a wonderful Christmas gift for all residents of Tenerife and the Canaries. It is an image that highlights the beauty and uniqueness of our island, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of caring for it and acting in a responsible manner.”
Additionally, the Minister for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, urges citizens to adhere to the guidelines and access limitations regarding the Teide National Park: “Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of the public. For this reason, following the instructions from the Security Forces and Bodies is crucial, as well as avoiding unnecessary trips to the region until it is safe.”
The Government of the Canary Islands, via the General Directorate of Emergencies, has initiated a pre-alert situation for snowfall in Tenerife, effective from 00:00 on Sunday. The forecast, which has materialised, predicts that at elevations exceeding 1,800 metres, precipitation will fall as snow, with potential accumulations above 2,000 or 2,200 metres, yielding up to 2 centimetres in 24 hours. In areas of Tenerife above 2,400 metres, snow accumulations could surpass 20 centimetres. Furthermore, a pre-alert has also been issued for rain, wind, and coastal conditions.
Advice for citizens:
- Avoid travelling to the Teide National Park while roads remain closed.
- Check updates regarding road conditions through the Road Information Centre of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.
- Exercise extreme caution if inclement weather continues in other regions of the island.
- The Cabildo reminds everyone of the importance of following the signs and instructions from security forces to prevent incidents.
