On the previous day, the Puerto de la Cruz City Council commenced the period for submitting requests for financial aid aimed at businesses impacted by the closure of the Playa Jardín facilities. This initiative, which aims to assist local enterprises, will feature a municipal contribution of 100,000 euros to support commercial activities in the area. The distribution of funds will be determined by the size of the business and the total number of staff, according to the administration led by the popular Leopoldo Afonso.
The application submission deadline is the 26th. Furthermore, this initiative is part of a broader array of actions agreed upon by the Porto governing group, which includes a 50% reduction in the waste management rate to be implemented “indefinitely”, as well as enhanced flexibility regarding the payment of municipal taxes, a provision already included in the upcoming fiscal calendar.
The Treasury Councillor, Pedro Antonio Campos, emphasised the significance of this financial aid in alleviating the economic strain on Punta Brava traders due to the temporary closure of Playa Jardín. This measure has been ongoing since July 3, due to the detection of bacteria in the water linked to faecal discharges, as reported by Public Health on June 21.
The Commerce Councillor, Diego Moreno, reiterated the Puerto de la Cruz City Council’s commitment to the commercial vitality of the municipality in general, and Punta Brava specifically. He further mentioned that this aid “is merely one aspect of the ongoing endeavour to ensure the viability and recovery” of the local economy, particularly considering the substantial adverse effects that the beach closure has placed on the commercial operations in this port area.
The Mayor, Leopoldo Afonso, also underlined that the economic prosperity of the municipality hinges on the welfare of its businesses. The councillor stated that “these measures reaffirm the commitment” of the governing group to fostering local development and economic sustainability in Puerto de la Cruz, as he mentioned in a declaration yesterday.
