The University of La Laguna (ULL), along with the town councils of Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos, and La Orotava, is set to launch the Universidad del Valle de La Orotava in the spring. This initiative aims to enhance access to university education for a larger segment of the population in the region. Although the three municipalities currently offer university extension courses, they aspire to create a programme akin to the one hosted in Adeje each summer.
To solidify the details for this new educational venture, the ULL and the three councils are increasing their meeting frequency. The government of Orotava has indicated that the collaborative goal is to initiate the University of the Valley of La Orotava this spring (the name is yet to be finalised), with preparations already in motion for the courses to be offered.
Plans from the University and councils suggest the introduction of three university courses in each locality, focusing on themes such as tourism, heritage, and the primary sector. Efforts are also underway to establish supplementary workshops and excursions to enhance the project and engage the relevant sectors.
Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos, La Orotava councils, and the University of La Orotava have created a working timetable involving meetings across all three beneficiary municipalities. Additionally, the parties are coordinating a probable launch date for the establishment of this public university in the northern region of the Island, with a target set for March or April 2025.
The University of La Laguna has expressed considerable interest in this initiative as well as in strengthening its educational outreach in the North. Although based in Orotava Valley, this endeavour will benefit all residents in the northern slopes. The institution remains committed to expanding and decentralising its educational activities, aiming to serve the entire population of the Canary Islands and cover the complete territory. The support from the three municipal bodies is also acknowledged, as they are committed to this project and are eager to provide university-level academic training to their communities.
Municipal representatives have indicated that this will be a historic achievement for the region, facilitating access to the Universidad del Valle de La Orotava. This will make university education more accessible and deliver offerings that are relevant to contemporary needs, thereby assisting residents in entering the job market and achieving personal and professional growth.
Recent working meetings have occurred in each municipality, with future sessions planned to establish the courses to be offered in the inaugural edition of this seasonal programme, which is designed with sustainability in mind.
