The Cuarteles del Cristo, a renowned site in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, is poised to embark on a new chapter in its legacy. Established in 1843 and serving military purposes for 170 years, this notable property has been purchased by the Tenerife Cabildo with the aim of transforming it into a prominent social and healthcare facility. With an investment amounting to 8.1 million euros, this initiative is geared towards enhancing the quality of life for elderly and disabled individuals on the Island, addressing the rising demand for specialised care services.
The acquisition, pioneered by the Cabildo’s governing team under the leadership of its president, Rosa Dávila, has been hailed as a historic achievement. “The Christ Barracks, which for many years fulfilled military roles, will be reimagined into a haven of care and hope for those in greatest need. This decision epitomises our dedication to the community and the responsible stewardship of our heritage,” stated Dávila.
The agreement with the Ministry of Defence, which has been in negotiation for several years, was finalised in under nine months due to effective and decisive leadership. “In less than a year, we succeeded in finalising an agreement that had been pending for many years. This illustrates our commitment to acting swiftly and efficiently for the benefit of our citizens,” the president commented.
Elderly Care Facility
The new socio-healthcare complex will feature residences following the cohousing model, functional living spaces for seniors with less dependency, and specialised centres for individuals requiring substantial support. Additionally, it will include a large day centre tailored to provide comprehensive care and community services. “We aim for this space to be more than just a care facility; it should serve as a genuine home for our elderly residents and individuals with disabilities, a space where they feel welcomed, respected, and valued. We aspire to establish a close-knit and adapted environment that not only meets their essential needs but also fosters their emotional well-being, autonomy, and connection with their families,” explained Dávila.
The primary goal of this project is to address the increasing need for social and healthcare facilities in the metropolitan area, where 46% of the Island’s population aged over 65 resides.
Tenerife is confronted with a pronounced shortfall in residential and day care services for the elderly and disabled individuals. Following the acquisition of the Cristo Barracks, it will be the Social Action division of the Cabildo that advances the subsequent steps towards transforming the space into a socio-health complex.

In this regard, an initial allocation of 100,000 euros has been included in the budget for the Insular Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS) for 2024, aimed at funding technical assessments and planning. This marks the first step towards the realisation of a project that is set to revolutionise social and healthcare provisions on the Island.
Beyond its social significance, the conversion of Cuarteles del Cristo will have a beneficial effect on the local economy. The construction of this complex will stimulate job creation within the construction industry, while its ongoing operation will generate permanent employment opportunities in health, administration, and general service sectors.
Situated in the centre of La Laguna, this initiative will also enhance local commerce and contribute to revitalising the area’s economic framework.
According to Rosa Dávila, the acquisition and refurbishment of the Cristo Barracks signifies far more than just an infrastructure project. “It stands as a declaration of Tenerife’s priorities—caring for our community while looking towards the future with optimism and resolve. This socio-health complex will serve as a legacy for future generations, embodying how the Island can adapt and innovate to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”
