A segment of the branch to the south that connects the highway San Miguel to Los Abrigos near Las Chafiras has been operational since yesterday afternoon. This initiative is part of the third lane project between San Isidro and Playa de las Américas, which is being undertaken by the Government of the Canary Islands.
This development enhances traffic flow in the region and alleviates congestion on the TF-65, a route that suffers from significant saturation, compounded by the ongoing works aimed at establishing a new connection to Las Chafiras with the Southern Highway.
Work on this segment of the third southern lane project commenced on January 31, 2019, when clearing operations began.
The measure implemented yesterday represents only a portion of the solution to the persistent congestion on the TF-1. Another component will involve completing the works on the entire Las Chafiras-Oroteanda route, which is anticipated to be finished by “mid-2025,” as announced by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, during the inauguration ceremony of the Oroteanda link route heading south.

This was executed on November 13, when the right branch of the Oroteanda link was introduced. This one-kilometre-long connection to the Southern Highway plays a key role in alleviating congestion on the TF-1, which sees an average of 87,000 vehicles per day, with over 20,000 expected to utilise this new infrastructure.
The most recent announcement from the Government of the Canary Islands indicated that the tender for the third lane between San Isidro (Granadilla de Abona) and Oroteanda (San Miguel de Abona) would be launched shortly, with a budget exceeding 100 million euros. This will be the first expansion section of the Southern Highway road network included in the ongoing project, which encompasses the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda link.
With a budget of 23,678,690 euros, construction of the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda link began on January 31, 2019, originally planned for completion within 30 months, by May 2022 (the signing of the stakeout act occurred on November 26, 2019). The execution of this project is now 30 months behind schedule, with the total completion of the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda route expected by mid-2025.
