The Department of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Canary Islands Government has approved a direct grant of 60,000 euros to Vilaflor City Council aimed at acquiring a property adjacent to the Town Hall, which will be transformed into a venue for exhibitions and cultural activities, enhancing municipal facilities and broadening the local cultural offerings.
This forthcoming space will showcase both temporary and permanent exhibitions of various types, promoting the artistic and cultural heritage, as well as fostering community engagement in activities of interest. In this regard, councillor Migdalia Machín states that, due to these supplementary allocations made to her department, “it is feasible” for local councils and the social fabric of the Canary Islands to obtain resources for “projects that are pertinent and of public interest while simultaneously safeguarding cultural heritage.”
The purchase of the property, situated in the zone influenced by the designation of Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) classified as a Monument, which has been declared in favour of the Church of San Pedro Apóstol, marks the initial step towards ensuring the preservation of a heritage and cultural space of significant architectural and historical importance. This initiative aims to enhance the cultural vitality of Vilaflor and attract visitors intrigued by its history and traditions.
The project addresses the necessity to provide an appropriate space for the promotion and dissemination of the cultural heritage of Vilaflor de Chasna, enhancing the protection, promotion, and sharing of historical and artistic heritage. The acquisition will facilitate the establishment of an accessible space for the community, enabling activities that reinforce local identity as a hub for educational, training, and cultural initiatives. Moreover, the establishment of an exhibition space within the urban centre will improve access to consistent and quality cultural programming, thereby enhancing the tourist appeal of Vilaflor.
