The votes cast by CC, PSOE, and Unidas Sí Podemos (the local governance) alongside the abstention from the PP (with the Mayor of NC absent), led to the Plenary session of Güímar approving the expropriation of 6,727 square metres of public land in Tasagaya. This area is situated in the primary service zone, extending from the rear of the health centre to Secundino Delgado Street (behind the Civil Guard barracks and the building housing a Hiperdino) and Arístides Hernández Mora Street (opposite the former IES Mencey Acaymo).
Gustavo Pérez, the Mayor, underscored the importance of this development for Güímar, describing it as “a crucial step towards the establishment of significant infrastructure.” He reaffirmed that this initiative “demonstrates our commitment to enhancing and expanding public services.” The establishment of new facilities is vital to meet the demands of our residents and to elevate the quality of life within the municipality.
Raquel Díaz, the PP councillor, argued for the healthcare utilisation of part of the land, adhering to the plenary agreement made in June 2020. She advocated for the expansion of the health centre into this area as a specialised care centre (CAE), highlighting the “increasing need” arising from the demographic of elderly residents in the municipality. The councillor also emphasised that such a measure would diminish the need for travel to access specialised services. The PP suggested prioritising this usage.
The Mayor deemed it unwise to “initiate a debate” regarding the topic and urged the Corporation to embark on a process of calm and thoughtful dialogue to ascertain the intended uses for this land, although it will temporarily serve as a parking lot. “Through these efforts, we are continuing to forge a promising future for our municipality, where infrastructure and services evolve to meet present-day requirements,” he remarked.
Tasagaya is also home to Güímar’s primary sports facilities (including a football pitch, terrero, sports centre, etc.), a building occupied by the Local Police and Social Services, the Municipal Swimming Pool, the Official Language School, CEIP Alfonso of Youth, and IES Mencey Acaymo featuring its Don Quixote Museum, among other amenities.
