Wave of Opposition: Nearly 3,500 Signatures Collected Against Los Majuelos Tram Project

The Civic Front of the Southwestern District of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, comprising various community associations, social and commercial bodies in the region, announced in a statement that they have recently submitted “to the Provincial Council, located in Santa Cruz, their appeal against the intention of the Cabildo and the town council to extend tram line 2 towards the Southwest along Los Majuelos avenue, which would modify the alternative route and “viable avenue of Hesperides Avenue or any other potential option.”

“In opposition to the demands of numerous residents and organisations that have voiced concerns both through these representations and in the signatures that challenge the claims made by the Cabildo, which stated that 99% of the local populace supported the tram on the aforementioned avenue,” they stated.

They express their objections regarding the administrations’ plans of “routing it to the Snowman with the aim of spending approximately €20 million on a 400-metre stretch on a steep incline, predominantly to benefit the Security and Emergency administrative buildings currently being erected, along with the high-performance sports facility for federated athletes, the nearby municipal office for its staff, and the proposed but currently stalled construction of the IASS for individuals with disabilities.
In light of this, they observe that “the urban centres and communities of the Southwest, which are varied, are being overlooked, along with the schools and colleges that would request increased tram services or the urban development of the future, particularly adjacent to Hesperides and the forthcoming commercial area,” which would be compatible with the tram configuration and would not involve “the degradation of the social and commercial fabric, which would result from dismantling a well-established avenue (Los Majuelos) where efforts continue to enhance it and support it socially; pursuing such an agenda would lead to its irrevocable demise,” they remarked.

Given the aforementioned, they criticise the “attempt to force the tram down Los Majuelos Avenue at all costs, now with the intake or entrance point (including the stop at Muñeco de Nieve) and later, over time, extending it solely along the area’s social and commercial hub, which would undoubtedly lead to its destruction,” they highlight.
