SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE December 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of Tenerife has expressed its opposition on Wednesday to the new traveller registry that has been implemented in Spain, arguing that it amplifies bureaucratic hurdles and undermines the competitiveness of tourism enterprises.
“We do not believe this regulation will provide anything innovative or beneficial,” stated the vice president and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, during the press briefing to discuss the agreements made by the Government Council.
He pointed out that the enactment of this royal decree “complicates” the operations of businesses further, in addition to the fact that it “intrusively” demands up to 42 pieces of customer data regarding their privacy. This requirement is not limited to tourist accommodations but extends also to the purchase of packages, air tickets or vehicle rentals.
He also lamented that the central government has not fulfilled its “commitment” to ensure the platform’s complete operation, which has resulted in “uncertainty” among businesses, as they lack comprehensive assurance that the data is being transmitted properly.
“We stand with the island’s business community and we will support their calls for ensuring first the swift operational capacity of this platform and secondly a review of its content,” he remarked. Although the corporation concurs with the “substance” of the European directive, it believes that “in form it has distinctly surpassed what is appropriate.”
