SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 2 December (EUROPA PRESS) –
The representative for the Government of the Canary Islands, Alfonso Cabello, affirmed this Monday the Executive’s dismissal of the parliamentary processing of the Socialist Group’s proposal to establish a tourist tax that levies charges on the overnight stays of non-residents.
During a press briefing to announce the resolutions of the Government Council, he remarked that the “same arguments” employed to reject a comparable proposal from the NC-BC group still apply.
Specifically, this concerns “the inability to differentiate between those visiting us and residents, how this impacts the residents of the Canary Islands who need to stay overnight for work or health purposes in another autonomous community, and the consideration of domestic tourism among other factors and legal aspects,” he elaborated.
The socialist proposal suggests a charge of between one and 3.5 euros per night, depending on the accommodation type, with the aim of generating approximately 250 million euros to be invested in enhancing and safeguarding the destination, as well as establishing an entity and a commission to promote sustainable tourism.
