Several dozen individuals gathered in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to express their outrage over the passing of Sully, the dog who was electrocuted in the city after stepping on a manhole cover linked to the electrical network.
The demonstration commenced outside number 69 Vicente Ferrer Street, the location where Sully tragically lost his life. This initiative has been organised by the community group from the El Toscal neighbourhood, aiming to raise awareness about the incident and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Last October, the dog died under circumstances that raised serious concerns among locals. According to the City Council’s reports, the incident was reported to 092, where emergency services were alerted to the tragedy after the dog interacted with a manhole cover belonging to the Endesa company positioned on the pavement. Upon arriving, officials confirmed the dog’s death and observed that smoke was emanating from the specific sewer.
Endesa, for its part, indicated it had not received confirmation that an electric shock was the cause of death and stressed that an autopsy would be crucial in uncovering the truth of what transpired.
This occurrence has stirred strong emotions among local residents and workers, many of whom reported hearing the dog’s cries during the incident. One bystander recounted that the dog experienced convulsions before passing away, describing the scene as utterly heartbreaking. Furthermore, some residents noted that this manhole cover had previously caused issues for other animals.
The protest aims to demand enhanced measures to ensure safety on public thoroughfares.
